We get it, there’s nothing more frustrating than sitting in the dark when your power cuts out. While some electrical issues need a licensed electrician straight away, there are a few simple things you can check first. Doing these quick checks might save you time, money, and stress (and if they don’t solve the issue, at least you’ll have more information to give us when we arrive).

1. Check Your Safety Switch

The first step is to head straight to your switchboard.

  • Look for the safety switch (RCD) it’s the one that often trips when there’s a fault.

  • If it’s flicked to the OFF position, try resetting it once.

  • If it won’t stay on, there may be a faulty appliance or wiring problem that needs a licensed electrician to investigate.

Important: Don’t keep flicking it back on if it keeps tripping, it’s a sign the safety switch is doing its job to protect you.

2. Unplug Your Appliances

Sometimes the problem isn’t your wiring at all, it’s an appliance.

  • Unplug everything in the affected area (fridge, microwave, heaters, TV, etc.).

  • Reset the safety switch again.

  • If the power stays on, plug your appliances back in one by one. The faulty appliance will usually cause the switch to trip again.

This is one of the most common causes we see in homes across Melbourne’s south-east, and the good news is, it’s usually an easy fix.

3. Check if It’s a Local Power Outage

Before you panic, take a look outside. Do your neighbours have power?

  • If the whole street is dark, it’s probably a supply issue with your energy provider.

  • You can confirm this by checking the AusNet Services outage map or calling your provider.

If it’s just your property that’s affected, that’s when it’s time to call us.
